Currys plans to create more than 1,100 new roles over the peak trading period that covers Black Friday, Christmas and January Sales.

The electricals giant is going on a recruitment drive for the busiest time of the year and is making 720 temporary roles available across its 301 UK and Ireland stores. It will also be adding 370 permanent positions and will recruit 120 drivers.

The temporary roles will be on a part-time basis and are largely made up of sales and support roles, offering applicants the opportunity to work directly with customers on the shop floor.

Currys is looking for applicants with “solid customer service and people skills” and successful applicants will start on an hourly rate of £10.50 outside of London and £11.50 in London following a pay rise for staff earlier this year.

Permanent colleagues who pass a six-month onboarding and skills development programme and are performing well will then have their pay boosted to £10.80 an hour and £11.80 in London.

Currys is also recruiting 120 full-time, permanent 7.5-tonne van drivers who will be trained to install the smart tech they deliver to customers.

Currys director of people, communications and sustainability Paula Coughlan said: “We’re delighted to be making over a thousand vacancies available ahead of this year’s peak trading period.

“Our customers know that shopping with Currys means getting access to the best support and advice when buying new tech. That’s why we’re opening up well over 900 extra roles across our stores, effective immediately.”

Applications for seasonal roles are open and start dates begin from October 15.
