Warm weather gives boost to June sales

Retail sales for June climbed by 1.9 per cent month-on-month and 6 per cent year-on-year, according to National Statistics, although retailers largely had good weather to thank.

'Warm weather has given retailers a barbecue boost, with more shoppers on the high street and more holidaymakers choosing to stay in Britain for their vacation,' said Barclays Business Banking national retail director Paul Clarke.

'High levels of mortgage equity release, which have improved the sale of household goods and strengthening consumer confidence mean this upturn may be more than a one-month wonder.

'But it remains to be seen if this is the start of a more sustained period of growth,' he cautioned.

Between April and June, the non-seasonally adjusted estimated value of household goods was 8 per cent up year-on-year. The leap was probably explained by gardening, barbecue and outdoor products, according to broker Seymour Pierce.
