Asda holds on to second place
Tesco has strengthened its position as the UK's biggest supermarket with almost 30 per cent of shoppers spending their money at the chain, driving revenue growth above 10 per cent for the first time this year.

The Total Till Spend report by ACNielsen examined the 12-week period to October 7 and showed that Asda remained slightly ahead of Sainsbury's in the battle for the number two spot behind Tesco - 15.4 per cent and 14.5 per cent market shares respectively.

The study also found that total food and grocery sales across the country had grown 4.8 per cent on the same 12-week period last year.

Within this figure, ACNielsen senior retail service manager Mike Watkins said that a 13.5 per cent increase in customer spending on fresh fruit and vegetables was evidence of the 'significant - healthy food and living trend'.
