US casual clothing retailer American Apparel is to increase its presence in London with two West End signings.

American Apparel has secured two 4,000 sq ft (370 sq m) stores to open before Christmas. The first is on Oxford Street, located to the east of Oxford Circus. It sits at 142-144, between Aldo and Esprit. The second is in Covent Garden, where the retailer has secured the former Carluccio’s space at 26-28 Neal Street.

In addition, the retailer has secured its second store outside London at Stock Exchange in Glasgow.

It runs five UK stores: four in London and one in Brighton. It is also rumoured to be taking a site at the Liverpool One centre, which opens next year.

Mark Smith, associate director at Churston Heard, which is advising the retailer, said: “Our focus is now on opening stores outside London.”

American Apparel completed its US$41 million (£20.1 million) secured debt financing with a private investment firm in January.

American Apparel chief executive Dov Charney said: “The transaction places the company on a firm financial footing and allows us to pursue our ambitious growth plans.”

The retailer, which is renowned for selling t-shirts produced under ethical conditions at its Californian factory, was founded in 1997 and has about 145 stores in 11 countries.
