Union pressure forces M&S about-turn

Marks & Spencer has backtracked on plans to cut Sunday and bank holiday double-time pay after a row with staff that prompted a rise in union membership at the retailer.

The turnaround was welcomed by unions including Usdaw, which campaigned for the plan to be scrapped.

'We had a recruitment drive in the stores a few weeks ago and signed up more than 100 members in a couple of days,' said Usdaw deputy general secretary John Hannett. 'We will be looking to boost our membership further over the coming weeks.'

Marks & Spencer had planned to reduce Sunday and bank holiday pay to time-and-a-half from April next year. The cut will now only apply to new staff.

Marks & Spencer does not recognise a union, preferring staff to communicate with management through its Business Involvement Group.
