MPs have been called on to help inform their constituents about Chip and PIN.
At a briefing by banks and retailers organised by the Chip and PIN Project Management Organisation, MPs and peers were introduced to the new transaction processing scheme, slated to come into force this time next year.
Following the presentation, Home Office minister Hazel Blears, who has a responsibility for crime reduction, implored MPs to help bring Chip and PIN to constituents' attention.
She said: 'It is important for us to embrace this initiative now. That includes us as MPs, who can promote Chip and PIN and answer any questions our constituents might have.'
