Google’s virtual try-on tool has launched in the UK and India.

The image generation model for fashion is described as understanding the “human body and nuances of clothing”, including how materials fold, stretch and drape over different bodies.

Google users can tap the ‘try it on’ icon on product listings to then upload a full-length image of themselves to see what the clothes could look like on them. Users can then share the image with friends.

In a blog post, Google product manager of consumer shopping Dominique McGowan said: “The feature makes online shopping more personal by letting you try on tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets and even shoes virtually – all by uploading a photo of yourself.

“The feature is powered by our custom AI model for fashion, which understands both the human body and nuances of clothing, like how different materials fold, stretch and drape on different body shapes, so you can see how a piece of clothing would actually look on you from a single photo of yourself.”
