The new partnership means that loyalty points collected at Sainsbury’s supermarkets or from other partners will now be swappable for a voucher that can be used on either platform operated by the US tech giant.
Sainsbury’s Nectar360, which operates the Nectar scheme, said it was the first time that it has partnered with a ride-hailing app. Uber will join over 500 other brand partners where Nectar account holders can use their rewards.
Through the Nectar app, users will be able to swap their points for an Uber or Uber Eats voucher. Between 500 and 4,000 points will be able to be redeemed at a time, equivalent to between £2.50 and £20.
“We’re giving people more ways to enjoy the value they get from Nectar, making everyday moments more rewarding. Being able to use Nectar points on Uber rides or an Uber Eats treat is something we know people will love, because it fits so easily into everyday life,” said Sainsbury’s chief technology, marketing and data officer Mark Given.
As well as ride hailing, Uber operates a travel booking service that covers train journeys, coach rides, Eurostar journeys, boats on the River Thames and car-hire bookings.
Its Uber Eats service, built initially around takeaway, has expanded in recent years to include rapid delivery of groceries and other retail products. It is already one of Sainsbury’s rapid delivery partners.
“Nectar has built a deep connection with British households, and we are so pleased to become their first-ever ride-hailing and delivery partner. By integrating our services, we’re providing Nectar’s loyal members with even more flexibility in how they spend their rewards, whether that’s a reliable ride home or a favourite meal delivered to their door, making daily life just that bit more seamless,” said Uber Eats head of grocery and retail Katie Hunter.
Loyalty points have become increasingly integrated with rapid delivery services in recent years. Nectar points can be collected on Sainsbury’s orders made through Uber Eats rival Deliveroo, while orders from Boots on either app can be used to collect Advantage Card points.
