Lidl has announced an overhaul to its loyalty app with the introduction of a new points system.

The discounter said that from May 5, Lidl Plus users will earn one point for every £1 they spend in store, with those points then being able to be redeemed for discount coupons that can either be used on the app or as money in-store.

The points system will replace set rewards for reaching monthly spend thresholds. Lidl Plus users have been notified of the changes to the old system called Coupon Plus.

Personalised coupons, which have always been a core feature of the app, will be unchanged after May 5.

“This is a way of bringing more possibilities and more control for customers over how they experience rewards and what they spend those rewards on,” Lidl chief customer officer Louise Weise told The Grocer.

“That might look very different for different people. Some will save up for an important time of year and some will treat themselves on their next shop. Because one thing we know about our customers is they’re all different, and they all want slightly different things.”
