John Lewis has opened in-store Christmas shops

The Christmas shops opened in all John Lewis branches today. Their debut followed a 145% sales uplift so far at the retailer’s online Christmas store.

There will be Santa experiences in 27 stores this year, including grottos in Oxford Street and Cardiff on December 4. Customers will be able to choose from experiences such as Santa’s tea parties and meet and greet.

John Lewis reported that “retro nostalgia” is a big decorative trend, and that sales of character ornaments such as vinyl record players and retro TVs are up 293% year on year.

John Lewis expects that “personality” will be in demand, with items such as alphabet stockings and personalised Quality Street tin ribbons. Staircase styling and mantel-scaping will “return big”.

John Lewis head of Christmas Lisa Cherry said: “This year we are seeing customers bring real personality to how they decorate their homes. From playful baubles with faces to bold stripes and nostalgic character decorations – the joy is mixing tradition with a twist.

“We’ve invested more than ever before in our Christmas decorations, gifts and experiences this year so customers can create magical moments that feel uniquely theirs.”

For the first time, the retailer is offering a teddy bear restoration service, making “pre-loved teddies with tales to tell, becoming the perfect re-gifted present”.
