Sports Direct’s new online news service didn’t get off to the most auspicious of starts, when it published an incorrect story involving the sports giant’s founder, Mike Ashley.

Sports Direct News sent shockwaves around the world of football when it revealed that Newcastle United - the team owned by Ashley - was looking to sign Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

However, it quickly followed with an apology for the story, which was “published without authority, merit and is untrue”.

A great example of corporate messaging.
