The retailer has been moving from a single-price architecture to a “simple” price architecture with multiple price points. However, soon after announcing that more than a third of its sales had been made at prices other than £1, in mid-2022 the retailer committed to leaning into its “iconic” £1 price point to help consumers save amid rising inflation. It also said it was “focusing on the value of single items, so customers are freed from the tyranny of being forced to buy in bulk to save money”.

With annual UK sales of £1.4bn, Poundland is the clear market leader in one of the fastest-growing segments of UK retailing. Its acquisition of rival 99p Stores led to consolidation across the single-price retail sector, while its main rival Poundworld closed down in 2018. Although it has been expanding its multi-price offer, Poundland continues to also lean into its eponymous £1 price point to help consumers amid rising costs. The launch of its nationwide ecommerce site is likely to see its dominance grow.
