Asda Opticians has appointed two new senior leaders and announced its £2.5m investment programme as part of its 2026 strategy.

The investment is aimed at supporting the development of Asda’s optical estate, enhancing clinical services, and strengthening both colleague training and progression opportunities.

It will include the refit of 18 optical units to modernise the space and improve the environment, upgrade diagnostic equipment, and add new pre-test technology for better detection, and add a new suite of training for colleagues who want to “refresh their knowledge and strengthen their confidence when dealing with customers and new products”.

The investment also covers the continued development of the Level 6 Dispensing Optician apprenticeship, as more will begin the programme in September 2026.

Asda Opticians has also appointed a new head of optical. Joe Huntford has spent three years with Asda’s field operations team, and will be “multi-site retail experience” with him.

Peena Govind has been appointed superintendent optometrist, after an 18-month stint as deputy superintendent. She will lead professional standards and clinical excellence across the estate.

Huntford said: “Asda Opticians has a clear strategy to continue growing, and through our continued investment in our facilities and colleague development, our focus remains on delivering accessible, high-quality, great value eye care for every patient who walks through our doors.”
