The supermarket is reportedly trimming roles while looking to increase its use of AI.
The job cuts are reported to affect all head office functions and target about 8% of staff, The Grocer reported yesterday. News of the restructuring was first reported by Better Retailing.
“During 2025, Morrisons commenced a long-term programme to re-engineer certain of its business functions, to concentrate on the core activities that our customers value, streamline processes and structures, automate a number of manual tasks and capitalise on the potential of data and AI to improve performance,” Morrisons said in a statement.
“This multi-year programme will ensure our central functions are better placed to serve our stores and strengthen our ability to deliver for customers in the current very challenging market conditions.”
“As we evolve and adapt, we are proposing to make some changes to a number of areas within our central structure. This will involve making some tough but necessary decisions, which will impact on colleagues in our head office, where we are proposing to place a number of roles at risk of redundancy.”
It is the second round of job cuts reported at Morrisons in the space of two months. In early March, the company said it was restructuring its convenience and general merchandise teams, putting around 100 roles at risks. This also saw the Morrisons Daily convenience store network become part of its broader retail division.
The news comes despite the retailer reporting a “much improved” Christmas trading period, with like-for-like sales increasing by 2.8% in the 13 weeks to January 25, 2026 versus the year before.
The company’s full-year results revealed that net debt in its 2024/2025 was £3.1bn, with an interest bill of £281m. This is despite net debt having fallen by 46% since 2022.
Speaking at LIVE: Retail Week x The Grocer 2026, chief executive Rami Baitiéh said the turnaround was “a marathon”, but that the brand was seeing the progress “today on every pillar of what we call the culture, process and the tools”.
