Morrisons has appointed former Greencore and Aldi executive Andy Gillies as its new logistics director.

The grocer said Gillies ā€œbrings a wealth of experience from over 30 years in retail and logisticsā€.

Gillies previously spent over 21 years with discount giant Aldi, having joined the retailer in 1996, just six years after it first launched in the UK.

He started as an area manager before eventually becoming the regional logistics director, responsible for the retailer’s entire warehouse and distribution operations across the Midlands.

He moved to logistics giant Greencore in 2016, becoming the group logistics director for the UK in 2022.

Gillies said: ā€œI’m really pleased to join such an iconic British retailer. Grocery is a tough and competitive sector and, with my team, my responsibility will be to deliver great service and availability to our stores, while finding operational efficiencies to reduce cost. I can’t wait to get startedā€.

Gillies joins Morrisons at a transitional time for the grocery giant. The most recent grocery market share data had discounter Lidl breathing down the grocer’s neck, even while the supermarket giant reported a return to profit earlier in August.

Morrisons has been focused on deleveraging and paying down the debt it accrued when it was sold to private equity firm CD&R in October 2021.
