Supermarket chain Asda has unveiled a new AI and cloud computing tie-up with Microsoft, which it called “one of the largest technology deals in UK retail”.

From today, Asda will transition to a cloud-first operating model, which it said would be “powered by Microsoft’s artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies” Azure suite.
The retailer will use Microsoft Azure to “modernise its operations and unlock new efficiencies across the business”, and said customers will “benefit from faster, more personalised services as Asda uses advanced data analytics and developer tools including Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, and Copilot Studio.”
Asda already had an existing relationship with Microsoft dating back to 2022, and currently uses its 365 Copilot technology to streamline “day-to-day operations by automating routine processes and allowing customers to focus on more strategic, high-value tasks”.
Asda chief digital officer Matt Kelleher said: “We’re thrilled to take our collaboration with Microsoft to the next level as we accelerate towards becoming a more agile, cloud-first business.
“With the very best cloud and AI tools at our fingertips, this technology will boost productivity, help us to make better decisions, and simplify how we work – enabling us to continue delivering great value and service to our customers.”
Microsoft UK & Ireland chief executive Darren Hardman said: “This collaboration with Asda exemplifies how cloud and AI technologies can transform retail at scale. By integrating Microsoft Azure’s advanced capabilities, Asda is modernising its operations, empowering its colleagues, and enhancing customer experiences. We’re proud to support Asda in its journey to become an agile, cloud-first, AI-driven business.”
The announcement comes just weeks after Asda executive chair Allan Leighton declared the business had completed its torturous decoupling from former owner Walmart’s technology stack.
