Asda has almost completed a £1bn IT upgrade, six months later than planned, which management believes will support the supermarket’s revival strategy.
The retailer told staff the project, which aimed to untangle its computer systems from its former owner Walmart, will be completed within weeks, according to The Telegraph.
Asda’s completion of the project and moving its final stores to the new digital network will end its four-year technology programme, known as Project Future, which was originally scheduled to finish in February.
The project has encountered various challenges impacting its delivery date, including a system update in March 2024 that resulted in payroll discrepancies impacting thousands of employees.
The extended timeline initially raised concerns about potential penalties for missing agreed deadlines with Walmart, though the US retailer has since approved a revised completion schedule.
In the months leading up to the completion of the project, Asda has let hundreds of workers go, with a streamlined workforce described by the supermarket as “mission critical” to its revival plans.
