More than 40 stores to open across Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary
Tesco is understood to be planning 40 outlets in central Europe this year. The retailer has 194 stores across Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. According to the Financial Times, the UK's number 1 grocer intends to increase this number to at least 243 stores.

While Tesco is expected to report record profits of more than£2 billion tomorrow, trading has been tough in Europe. In January, the retailer said it faced stiff competition from discounters, such as Aldi and Lidl, forcing it to cut prices.

The biggest expansion is expected to be in Hungary, with 16 stores planned over this year and next.
