Retail Solutions - Sainsbury's self-checkouts suit last-minute buys

Sainsbury's has carried out research to justify its investment in self-checking out, in anticipation of increased basket volumes during the festive period.

The study found that customers are likely to forget one or more of a list of key items when shopping for Christmas.

Sainsbury's and self checkout hardware provider NCR are using the results to highlight the effectiveness of the retailer's 136 self-checkout tills, located in 34 UK stores.

Self-checkouts are thought to be more suited to a high volume of low-value basket traffic, so would be ideal for shoppers making a last-minute dash for a crucial item they need to make their Christmas Day complete.
