Retail Property - Developers reveal plans for Leeds regeneration

Hammerson and Town Centre Securities, together with Leeds City Council, have launched a major consultation programme on their regeneration proposals for the Eastgate and Harewood quarters in Leeds city centre.

The proposals, which are still in the early stages of development, are for the regeneration of the eastern side of Leeds city centre. This would involve retail-led, mixed-use development of 20 acres (8.15 ha) of the city centre, directly to the east of the Victoria Quarter, the market and the bus station.

Architect Leslie Jones has been appointed to plan the mixed-use development, which is expected to incorporate retail, leisure and office space, residential areas, public open space, community facilities and associated car parking.

The developers say the proposals will include new state-of-the-art retail space to accommodate flagship stores for retailers that are not represented in the city centre at the moment.

Two major department store operators are also understood to have expressed an interest in anchoring the development.

Following the outcome of the consultation, the regeneration concept will be evolved with a view to a planning application being submitted in the summer.

Hammerson development director Bruce Isles said: 'Leeds is widely recognised as one of the most vibrant cities in the UK, yet with much more potential to be realised.

'Together with Town Centre Securities, we are eager to help secure the city's future, with a complementary mix of retail, leisure and city living within this largely underdeveloped quarter of the city.'
