Retail Property - Developers line up to revamp Bath Post Office

Designer Conran and Partners, and the Trevor Osborne Group are bidding to buy the 32,560 sq ft (3,025 sq m) Post Office building which fronts New Bond Street, Broad Street and Green Street in Bath.

It is understood that they are planning a mix of retail, restaurants and residential. Agent Wilson McHardy is advising the team. The Grade 2-listed main Post Office is considered to be one of the most significant properties to come on the market in central Bath in recent years, because redevelopment will make large retail and restaurant units possible.

Zara, which typically requires 10,000 sq ft (930 sq m), and Borders are among retailers seeking space in the World Heritage City. Five other developers are also in the running to acquire a 150 year lease from Bath Council, the freeholder.

Bob Chapman, partner in King Sturge's Bath office, which is advising the council, said the building has planning consent for a redevelopment of 41,000 sq ft (3,810 sq m), but a variation in the consent could permit a scheme of up to 55,000 sq ft (5,110 sq m). This would be made possible by creating either a one or two storey atrium in the inner courtyard.
