Property News - Imocom opens Santarem mall

The Imocom Group has completed its 160,000 sq ft (14,860 sq m) W Shopping mall in Santarem, Portugal.

The mall, designed by Broadway Malyan, opened 90 per cent let and expects to receive 5 million shoppers during its first year. It forms the centrepiece of a wider mixed-use scheme including offices and residential development.

Blu Market has taken the anchor food store and there are 70 individual shop units trading over three levels, including four units leased to Zara parent Inditex. CB Richard Ellis is the letting agent.

Stuart Rough, director of Broadway Malyan's Portuguese operation, said Portugal was seeing a new wave of shopping centre development that focused on secondary locations and provincial cities.

Mercasa has just opened a 175,000 sq ft (16,000 sq m) mall at Beloura - between Sintra and Cascais to the north of Lisbon - while Dutch developer AM is on site at Coimbra with the 700,000 sq ft (65,000 sq m) Forum Coimbra project, part of a wider urban regeneration initiative to open in 2005.
