Fashion giant Primark has announced a pay rise of more than 9% to around 27,000 of its employees, effective from April 1.

Retail Week Awards-Primark

Hot on its success at the Retail Week Awards, Primark is rewarding its “brilliant” retail assistants with a pay rise

Primark is set to hike its hourly pay to £12.00 for retail assistants in England, Scotland and Wales, while London-based colleagues will see an increase to £12.56.

Last year, retail assistants received £11.00 an hour, and £11.51 for staff working in London.

The latest pay rise means Primark employees will have seen an hourly rate pay increase of more than 20% on average over the last two years.

Primark staff will also continue to benefit from a 15% year-round employee discount, as well as other benefits.

Primark UK retail director Kari Rodgers said: “Our colleagues do a brilliant job every day serving our customers and we want everyone to be fairly rewarded and recognised for their hard work.

“We hope this pay increase goes some way towards demonstrating our continued thanks for all that they do in our stores and for our customers.”

Primark employs more than 30,000 retail and head office staff in the UK. The news comes after the fashion giant pledged to invest more than £100m into its store estate this year as it marks its 50th anniversary on UK high streets.

Primark picked up this year’s Retail Week International Retailer award after impressing judges with its expansion in key emerging markets while maintaining its track record of success at home.
