The chief executive and founder of Just Eat is stepping down from his role at the rapid delivery platform following a £3.6bn takeover by Prosus.

Jitse Groen founded the business 25 years ago in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and is departing after global technology investor Prosus acquired the group in October.

Starting as Takeaway.com, Groen’s delivery service grew to many European markets and merged with the UK-listed Just Eat in 2020 to form Just Eat Takeaway.

His successor will be chai of the Just Eat supervisory board and head of Prosus Europe, Roberto Gandolfo, who will start on January 1 pending regulatory approval.

Prosus chief executive Fabricio Bloisi said: “Very few founders can claim to have built a company that reaches this level of scale, impact and relevance.”

Groen added: “After a quarter-century as founder and chief executive of Just Eat Takeaway.com, I am leaving the company. I am immensely proud of what our team has built, and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of this remarkable journey.”

Gandolfo said: “I’m excited to join at this pivotal moment and to work closely with Just Eat Takeaway’s leaders to unlock the company’s next chapter of growth.”
