Just Eat has launched a new robot delivery trial in the UK in time for an expected busy Valentine’s Day weekend.
The ecommerce platform will make deliveries through Delivers.AI in Bristol and RIVR robots in Milton Keynes to form part of a small scale trial with 10 independent restaurant brands.
The robots will start delivering from restaurants and will support demand for takeaways as Valentine’s Day is typically a popular time for customers to order in.
The South West region, where Bristol is located, saw the biggest rise in orders on Valentine’s Day last year.
The robotics trial arrives after another pilot in Switzerland, where nearly 1,000 deliveries have been completed. Just Eat also continues to trial drone delivery in Ireland.
The platform said both autonomous ground and drone deliveries give advantages of reaching remote areas and “improving delivery service during busy times”.
It said it will “continue to launch new innovative ways to deliver with a further partner expected to come onboard in the coming weeks”.
Just Eat chief technology officer Mert Öztekin said: “We’re always innovating to improve the delivery experience for our customers. To trial ground robotics, we’ve teamed up with two expert organisations to ensure that we’re learning and working with the very best.
“For those in Bristol and Milton Keynes who love tech – what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than a robot delivery from your favourite local.”
