Tesco currently uses AI to optimise online shopping and demand forecasting, but the deal will deepen Tesco’s AI capabilities within its operations by providing access to Mistral’s commercial models and engineers.

The two companies will collaborate to develop new generative AI solutions for various areas of the business through their new “joint AI lab.”

Tesco is the first major UK retailer to partner with Mistral AI, the only frontier AI company in Europe developing large language models (LLMs).

Tesco data, analytics and AI director Ruben Lara Hernandez said: “By bringing together our retail expertise and Mistral AI’s cutting-edge technology, we hope this partnership could ultimately save colleagues time, improve how we do things, and help us to better serve our customers.”

Mistral AI chief revenue officer Marjorie Janiewicz added: “Our applied AI team will collaborate with Tesco’s experts to build customisable, controllable and frontier AI products to improve internal workflows and Tesco’s customer experience.”
