The appointment marks a return to Asda for Blackhurst, who starts at the grocer next month. He replaces Kris Comerford.

Blackhurst held the same role some years ago and brings experience from other retailers, including Morrisons and Coles in Australia.

Blackhurst joins Asda as executive chair Allan Leighton, another returnee who took up his role last year, aims to turn around the embattled grocer, which has lost ground to competitors since its takeover by the Issa brothers and private equity house TDR Capital.

He is the latest hire as Asda has reshaped its leadership team following Leighton’s arrival.

Leighton said in a message to Asda staff: “Kris has been at Asda for three years and has been a key member of the executive team throughout that period.

“Kris’ style, approach and persona are unique. As well as being a great colleague, he is also an amazing human being.

“We wish him and his family well for the future and thank him for all he has done for the company.

“I’m delighted to announce that Darren Blackhurst will be rejoining the company as chief commercial officer, food. Darren spent four years at Asda in this role between 2006 and 2010, as well as a similar role at Morrisons, and recently has been the MD of the Coles Liquor business in Australia.”

As part of the management changes, the Asda Express and Food Services team under Chris Walker will now report to chief supply chain officer David Lepley. Jo Whitfield will continue to chair that business. Asda’s fuel team will report to Blackhurst.
