The latest offensive in the grocery price war is being fought out this weekend, as leading supermarkets slash prices of key lines once again.

Asda has cut the price of milk to 25p a pint by selling two-pint bottles for 50p and is discounting staples, such as bread, butter and eggs, to 50p until Sunday (August 17).

Tesco, which claims its price reductions have saved shoppers£620 million since March, said it has 18,000 products on promotion this week, including school uniforms for£3.50. The price of organic produce has been cut by up to 25 per cent and homewares by 50 per cent.

Price promotions are becoming increasingly important to supermarket groups as shoppers, hit by food price inflation and pressure on discretionary income, seek value.

Asda trading director Darren Blackhurst said: “Customers are telling us this is the time of the month that they’re really starting to feel the pinch and that’s why we’re investing in price cuts where they really count – on everyday essentials.”

Tesco commercial director Richard Brasher said: “Despite clear inflation in some food products, we have worked hard to cut our prices week after week.”
