Total sales rose 6.6% in the year to end-March 2023 (FY2022), more than recouping the previous year’s 2.7% shortfall. This had come against exceptionally strong comparatives as group sales had surged 30% in FY2020 when its essential retailer status had paid off by allowing it to remain open during lockdown periods. While margins came under some pressure in FY2022 as it invested in keeping prices down and continuing to grow the estate in the face of high cost inflation, they remain well ahead of pre-pandemic levels.
