Value retailer The Range has made a deal to buy the Wilko brand from administrators PwC for around £5m, saving 36 jobs in the process.

The Range has agreed to acquire the Wilko brand, website and intellectual property, with a view to resume online operations in October. As a result, 36 employees from Wilko’s digital team will transfer over to The Range.

This follows news of Poundland snapping up 71 former Wilko sites in places where the retailer has a limited presence.

B&M has also taken on 51 sites for the price of £13m. The locations will be revealed on November 9, along with its half-year financial results.

Joint administrator Jane Steer said: “Since our appointment, the feedback from customers and wider stakeholders during this challenging period has reinforced the fact that Wilko remains a much-loved and trusted brand within the UK.

“This sale to The Range will ensure that the Wilko name lives on under their ownership and we wish The Range every success.”

Wilko stores will close for good by early October and widespread redundancies have already taken place.

Joint administrator Zelf Hussain said: “The dedication shown by all team members during this period has been hugely humbling and we are grateful for the patience and understanding they have shown.

“As with those who have already been given notice of redundancy, we will guide and support those team members impacted over the coming weeks through the redundancy claims process. We also continue to collaborate closely with relevant agencies and engage with any potential employers to help facilitate a quick return into new employment for those impacted.”
