Property News - Liberty II to receive 50,000 sq ft extension

Residential space and an Asda supermarket are to be added to the Liberty II shopping centre at Romford, Essex.

The centre, part of The Mall Fund operated by Capital & Regional, has gained outline planning permission to tack on a 50,000 sq ft (4,645 sq m) Asda supermarket and 220 new residential units, to be built by Barratt Homes. The development will occupy the site of the Dolphin Leisure Centre, built as a recreational complex during the 1970s. The Asda store is likely to be completed in 2005.

The£950 million Mall Fund operates 13 UK shopping centres under The Mall name, which is being developed as a brand for community shopping centres.

The Mall chief executive Ken Ford said: 'The aim of The Mall and its partners is to provide quality residential units and an improved retail offer, which will contribute to the continued success of Romford as a shopping location.'

The 320,000 sq ft (29,730 sq m) Liberty II centre provides 38 stores attracting more than 250,000 shoppers a week.
