Paul Marchant had been at Primark since 2009

In an announcement to the London Stock Exchange, ABF announced that Primark boss Paul Marchant has left following an investigation involving external lawyers, “into an allegation made by an individual about his behaviour towards her in a social environment”.

It said Marchant cooperated with the investigation, “acknowledged his error of judgement” and accepted his actions were below the standards of what is expected by ABF.

He has apologised to the person concerned, the ABF board, Primark colleagues and others linked to the business.

ABF said it seeks to provide a “safe, respectful and inclusive work environment” where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and Primark is committed to “doing business the right way” at all levels of the company.

The group will continue to offer support to the person involved.

On an interim basis, ABF finance director Eoin Tonge will be Primark’s chief executive and work with the senior management team and strategic advisory board.

ABF group financial controller Joana Edwards will be the interim ABF finance director.

ABF chief executive George Weston said: “I am immensely disappointed. At ABF, we believe that high standards of integrity are essential.

“Acting responsibly is the only way to build and manage a business over the long term. Colleagues and others must be treated with respect and dignity. Our culture has to be, and is, bigger than any one individual.”
