Morleys has been bucking the trend of department stores by growing both its store estate and revenue. David Hordle discusses the factors affecting the sector.

Since joining as boss of Morleys in 2014, David Hordle has overseen the opening of two new department stores and investment in a number of other stores.

Throughout all of this, he’s placed emphasis on remaining relevant to its local customers.

He explains how the vision for the business is to be “the first choice for the local people”.

By doing this, Hordle hopes to create a sense of loyalty and divert customers who may otherwise visit out-of-town shopping centres or buy online.

He believes that department stores are uniquely placed to combat competition from the online retailers by relying on experience and customer service.

Hordle talks about this and much more in this episode of Listen.
