Asos has paid tribute to one of its co-founders who died after a fall in Thailand.

Quentin Griffiths co-founded As Seen on Screen in 2000

Quentin Griffiths launched the online fashion business alongside former chief executive Nick Robertson in 2000.

Griffiths left Asos – originally called As Seen on Screen – after a few years but retained a shareholding and went on to establish other companies.

He set up Achica, a home goods members’ retail site using a flash Sale model. It became part of Worldstores, which in turn was acquired by Dunelm and is now owned by BrandAlley.

Griffiths died earlier this month after falling from a high-rise apartment block in Thailand. He had lived in the country for several years.

An Asos spokesperson said: “We’re saddened to hear about the passing of Quentin, one of our original co-founders. He played an important role in Asos’ earliest days and we’re forever grateful for his contribution. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Asos changed the face of UK fashion retail as it rose to become one of the industry’s most influential players. At one point, its valuation surpassed that of established giants such as Marks & Spencer.

In more recent years, Asos has faced challenges and chief executive José Antonio Ramos Calamonte has spearheaded a turnaround programme.

Asos is the minority owner of Topshop, which is being revived by majority shareholder Bestseller and made its debut in John Lewis stores this week – the first time it has had a high street presence in the last five years.
