Homewares retailer Lombok has ramped up its clearance space in its London warehouse in an effort to lure in cash-strapped shoppers.

Lombok has expanded the clearance space at its Fulham warehouse from 500 sq ft to 20,000 sq ft and brought in other retailers to share further space as concessions. The clearance stock will be sold at between a 20 and 70 per cent discount. Some of the stock will be damaged goods.

Trading alongside Lombok in the cut-price warehouse is The White Company, antique furniture supplier Nine Schools and furniture designer Julian Chichester.

Lombok managing director William Landale said: “We want to counter the attack of the downturn. We’ve hit on to something here. It’s got legs in this market.”

Nine Schools, which also operates a concession in Selfridges, has 500 sq ft in the warehouse while The White Company is believed to have about 1,500 sq ft.

Nine Schools director Patrick Rawson said: “We’re pleasantly surprised. It’s working for us and we will be carrying on for the foreseeable future.”

Landale said the homewares market is “incredibly tough” and any claim that the sector will gain from the brutal downturn as cash-poor customers seek to improve their house instead of moving is “absolute rubbish”.
