Sales at department store chain John Lewis rose 10.5% to £51.4m last week as shoppers bought into the latest fashion trends.

“Shops reported a real hunger from customers for all things new,” said John Lewis Region B selling operations director David Barford. “customers were keen to see the new Autumn trends and colours.”

John Lewis said home sales rose 12% on last year with fitted furniture, furnishing fabrics and home accessories leading the way. New lines in upholstery, beds, bedroom furniture and lighting also performed well.

Sales of electricals and technology saw a 3% uplift, driven by a strong interest in iPads and computer equipment.

The retailer’s stores generated a sales rise of 7% and online sales jumped 34%.

“Overall, a splendid week’s trade - looking forward to a good back-to-school and a great bank holiday,” said Barford.

Sales at sister grocery chain Waitrose climbed 9.9% to £88.5m over the week. Spanish food was especially popular.
