Tesco has announced it will overhaul its Express stores by swapping more than 50 key everyday products with lower-priced alternatives.

Many items replacing products will be from its own-brand range, with some items costing less than a third of the price of the original items.

Across products included in the change, customers will see that own-brand options are more than 40% cheaper, on average, than the products they replace.

Internal shopping data from the supermarket shows price-conscious shoppers are increasingly choosing own-brand products.

Some of the own-brand lines being introduced include penne pasta at 85p and smooth peanut butter at £1.65, both of which cost half the price of the previous branded products stocked.

Some branded lines such as toothpaste are being replaced by cheaper brands at less than a third of the price. Tesco is also slashing the price of some branded nappies in Express stores by as much as 40%.

The new products will be delivered to stores over the next fortnight, with rollout set to be complete by the end of August.

Tesco Convenience managing director Sarah Lawler said: “We know customers are watching every penny at the moment, so we hope these helpful product swaps will bring down food bills for even more families.

“Our Express stores offer unbeatable value on everything from essentials to fresh produce, making healthy food more accessible for the 2,000 communities that we serve across the UK.

“And while our convenience stores don’t have the shelf space to carry the full range of our larger shops, by swapping these products, we’ve been able to make way for even more of our great-value own brand ranges.”
