Morrisons has introduced a new ‘speedy shopping’ system for customers looking to make smaller basket purchases in a bid to reduce queuing times outside its supermarkets.

The grocer said from today, customers doing smaller basket shops for essential products at all stores would be able to use the system so they can “get in and out” of stores more quickly.

The retailer will introduce a separate speedy shopping queuing lane outside stores, with three customers being invited in alongside every one customer looking to make a trolley shop.

Customers in the speedy shopping queue will only be allowed to pick up a basket once inside the store, as opposed to a trolley.

There will also be speedy shopper checkouts in-store – both staff-operated and self-scan – and transactions will be card only.

Chief executive David Potts said: “It’s fair that customers doing smaller shopping trips should queue for less time too. Speedy Shopping will ensure that Morrisons stores will be more convenient for customers wanting a small basket of items.”

Social distancing measures introduced both inside and outside supermarkets has led to customers being forced to queue outside and has also meant that many retailers have been forced to extend opening and staff hours to accommodate meeting demand.
