Marks & Spencer has upped the number of food stores offering a checkout-free shopping experience from 100 to 310.

The mobile payment technology offers customers the option to scan their shopping using the M&S app on their smartphone and pay without having to visit a till.

The Mobile Pay Go scheme can be used for shopping up to the value of £30.

M&S is promoting the service heavily in store, inviting customers to download the app and give Mobile Pay Go a try. Customers are also invited to refer a friend to the technology, for the reward of £1 off their next Mobile Pay Go shop for both them and the friend.

The accelerated rollout of the technology comes as part of the retailer’s digital-first pledge, which has also seen the overhaul of its Sparks loyalty programme.

M&S director of stores Helen Milford said: “As part of our Never the Same Again programme, we’re accelerating the pace of our transformation – and that includes creating digitally connected stores that are fit for the future.

“This rollout takes our increasingly popular Mobile Pay Go technology nationwide for the first time, allowing more customers to enjoy a seamless checkout-free experience through the M&S app.

“With more customers starting to return to the workplace, this provides a quick and convenient lunchtime solution – making it easy to pop in, grab your items and be on your way.”
