Lidl has overtaken Asda to become the third-largest supermarket in London as its market share hit an all-time high of 9.1%.

Lidl Putney High Street

The grocer experienced the fastest growth among all supermarkets in the capital, according to the latest Kantar data for the 52 weeks to October 1, 2023.

The discount supermarket said its growth is a result of its £500m investment in the capital and reflects its “unwavering commitment” to ensure all Londoners have a Lidl store within easy reach.

Lidl chief executive Ryan McDonnell said: “We have a clear commitment to providing shoppers with the very best value and becoming the third-largest supermarket in London reinforces our dedication to ensuring that everyone can eat affordable, high-quality food, no matter where they live.

“We know convenience plays a huge factor when choosing where to shop in the city, which is why we’re pushing on with plans to bring many more locations to the capital in the future.”
