Chinese marketplace Temu has said it has been the target of Shein’s “unlawful exclusionary tactics”, adding to the ongoing feud between the online retailers days after a lawsuit was filed.

The lawsuit filed on Friday accuses Shein of violating antitrust laws. In a statement to Reuters on Wednesday, the company said it had to take legal measures to defend its and its merchants’ rights due to “escalating attacks” from Shein.

Temu’s lawsuit alleges that Shein has abused its market power in trying to coerce manufacturers to shun Temu.

The company’s complaint alleged Shein “forces manufacturers to sign loyalty oaths certifying that they will not do business with Temu”.

A spokesperson for Shein on Wednesday repeated an earlier statement in response to the lawsuit: “We believe this lawsuit is without merit and we will vigorously defend ourselves.”

The two online retailers are also involved in another legal battle, in which Shein has alleged Temu worked with influencers to discredit Shein on social media.

The new antitrust lawsuit is another legal problem for Shein as a group of designers sued the company last week alleging “systemic and repeated” copyright infringement.
