Mitch Hughes: ‘There’s so much opportunity in the menswear market and M&S is now well set up to deliver growth’

The industry stalwart, who led the strategy and vision at Boohoo Group as managing director following the acquisition of former Arcadia brands, will replace M&S director of menswear and kidswear Wes Taylor who will retire this month.

Hughes was instrumental in bringing Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Wallis into Boohoo following the takeover in 2021, while protecting each brand’s distinct offer and heritage.

M&S described Hughes as having a “wealth of valuable knowledge on pureplay digital retail as well as physical retail” from his experience at Topshop, Topman, Burton, Matalan and M&S.

Hughes, who also served as Topman’s managing director, said: “I’m hugely excited to be rejoining the business after over 15 years.

“I have been impressed with the transformation journey Richard [Price, clothing and home managing director], Wes and the team have taken the clothing and home business on.

“Everyone I’ve met has clarity on the strategy and journey ahead. There’s so much opportunity in the menswear market and M&S is now well set up to deliver growth across all markets and channels to their customers.

“I’m looking forward to joining the team and continuing to shape the future of M&S. Bring on 2023.”

Taylor was credited by M&S for making the menswear and kidswear sections “more relevant, stylish, and contemporary” during his four-year tenure.

Alex Dimitriu, currently head of buying for menswear, has been promoted to director of kidswear and will take over in February.

She developed her career in and outside of M&S and has more than 25 years of buying experience.

Hughes and Dimitriu will work alongside Heidi Woodhouse, director of home, Laura Charles, director of lingerie, and Maddy Evans, director of womenswear.
