John Lewis sales edged up last week as a boost in electricals and home technology offset flagging performance elsewhere.

The department store retailer said sales advanced 1.4% in the seven days to March 20, as poor home and furniture sales were offset by a 7.5% jump in its electricals and home technology category.

Success here was driven, it said, by interest in branded audio and mobile.

Fashion sales were up 1.8%, as beauty sales rose 18.1% around a price-match event.

Home sales remained a pain point, down 5.4% year on year.

This week, John Lewis opened its 50th shop at Westfield London, designed under the company’s new, experience-centric vision.

Waitrose

Sales at the upmarket grocer advanced 2.4%, driven by strong sales in ambient food categories – up 5.2%.

Waitrose said household cleaning products, particularly online, were another highlight.

JLP

Sales across the partnership inched up 2% to £206.18m.
