Chocolate retailer Thorntons has been around for more than a century. The chain was established in 1911 by Joseph William Thornton who opened a sweet shop in Sheffield and entrusted his 14-year-old son Norman to run the shop telling him to make it the “best sweet shop in town”.

The retailer and brand remained British owned until 2015 when it was bought by Italian firm Ferrero for £112m.

Since taking ownership of Thorntons, Ferrero has conducted a strategic review of the business, restructuring the company and shuttering stores as it attempts to stem losses.
