Borders is to implement a store communication system as part of the software refresh it is undertaking this year.

The Rapid Store Management System from Retail Answers will provide additional functionality to Itim’s web-based integrated software suite, which Borders will use at its head office and in stores (RW, March 20).

Borders is in the process of replacing all of its systems as a result of the split from previous US owner Borders Group International. Borders chief executive Philip Downer told Retail Week last month that the replacement of the retailer’s systems is the biggest project taking place within the business this year.

The store communications system is also web-based, so both head office and store staff will be able to access it. It will provide each store with a diary and a to-do list, as well as highlight new information. Web forms can also be created in the system, which allows a retailer to collect information from stores without generating masses of paperwork.

Borders said that it selected the system because of the simplicity of its user interface. As well as being easy to use, it can be configured to suit each retailer without being overly complex.

Borders chief information officer Simon Thomas said: “Rapid is part of the Borders strategic IT initiative, meeting a key requirement for store communication that wasn’t covered by any other system. It was cost-effective and quick to implement in comparison with [other] systems.”
