Supermarket giant Tesco has developed an augmented reality app to tie up with the release of Iron Man 3.

Once downloaded the app gives shoppers, or more likely their children, the chance to activate content by scanning in-store signage around the toy department. When they have scanned the signs, they can see an augmented reality version of Iron Man. Users can also take photos of themselves “wearing” his suits. The app allows people to share the photos online, tapping into the anticipation around the film’s release. The app also features a game that uses augmented reality.

Using an app like this around the release of a film offers several benefits to the retailer. It will encourage shoppers to visit the store and specifically the toy department. It also serves as an advert, displaying the range of branded products available.

Customers can download the app, called Stark Armoury, on iOS or Android devices.
