Tourism boost to the UK
A report by tax-free shopping specialist Global Refund revealed that Australians spent£588 million in the UK last year, a rise of 14 per cent since 2000.

Global Refund UK managing director Zvono Bednarcik said: 'Australians are among the top 10 tax-free spending nationalities in the UK and rank alongside other key nationalities, such as Russians, Indians and visitors from Hong Kong.'

Last year, Global Refund made 19 per cent more VAT refunds to Australians who had been shopping in UK stores compared with the previous year.

According to the report, Aussies prefer some of the UK's most recognised retailers, such as Selfridges, Harrods and Marks & Spencer.

About 800,000 Australian tourists visited the UK last year and projections estimate that this number will climb by 5 per cent this year.
