Woolworths is to transform its fascias to canary yellow next week to promote The Simpsons Movie, which is released on DVD on Monday.

Five stores will be “Simpsonised”, with Woolies' traditional red frontage completely replaced by Simpsons yellow. Life-size versions of Bart and Homer will also appear in the window, along with meeters and greeters dressed as the characters in stores. At about 200 stores, the Os in the Woolworths sign will be replaced by doughnuts, a favourite of Homer Simpson. The DVD is expected to be a massive hit this Christmas.

The stores to receive the treatment include Chiswick, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Glasgow and Swindon.

The retailer has also enlisted the help of Simpsons creator Matt Groening to help boost sales of the DVD with an unusual addition to the world-famous Simpson household. Groening’s team has drawn Woolworths brand characters Wooly & Worth sitting in the Simpsons’ front room, on the sofa normally occupied by Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, for an ad campaign set to launch next week. It is the first time the cartoonists have drawn for any retailer.

Woolworths DVD and CD trading manager Alan Hunt said: “The movie will be a massive seller, with more than 1 million people expected to snap up the DVD version in the first week alone.”
