Wider adoption of trial format at Mothercare

Mothercare has embarked on a limited roll-out of a new store design for its high street stores, following a successful trial at Hammersmith in London.

Elements of the trial store, which opened last September under previous chief executive Chris Martin, have gone into about 10 refitted stores, including one at Cheltenham. Its nearby store at Bristol's Cribbs Causeway shut last month.

'It's not a commitment to full roll-out, but it is being trialled in other stores,' said a spokeswoman for Mothercare. She said the refitted stores included features introduced by new chief executive Ben Gordon.

Gordon is to update the market on his strategy at a results meeting next month. The retailer has consistently been the subject of takeover rumours since distribution problems led to poor trading.
