International expansion key to growth
German café to general merchandiser chain Tchibo is to expand at home and abroad, with the UK high on its list of priorities.

For the last fiscal year, sales at Tchibo Group increased 6 per cent year on year to Eu8.8 billion (£6 billion), with revenue evenly split between its German and international operations.

Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) rose 13 per cent to Eu868 million (£591.9 million) and the retailer's global staff count was up 2 per cent to 29,619.

Tchibo Holding chairman & chief executive officer Dieter Ammer said: 'Our growth strategy has been successful because we were able to create some 700 jobs during the year under review.'

Tchibo said it plans to continue growing aggressively in the UK, Germany and Eastern Europe by expanding the presence of its Arena shop-in-shop format that fits into supermarkets.

Last year, Tchibo opened its first store in Poland and expanded its presence in Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands and Czech Republic.
